Prof. Pardhanandana Reddy Penagaluru is the Head of the Department of Environmental Toxicology and Research Director of Bhagwan Mahavir Medical Research Centre (BMMRC) He has 45 years of Research and Teaching experience in radiation Biology, Environmental Toxicology and Genetics.

Earlier he has served as Director of the Institute of Genetics & Hospital for Genetic Diseases for 16 years. He also served as I/C Dean, Medicine & Dean, Faculty of Science, Osmania University.

He also served as the Dean, Faculty of Science & Technology, Mahatma Gandhi National Institute of Research Social Action (MGNISA). Now he is the Chairman of Ethics Committee for Biomedical Research of (i) MAA Hospitals, Hyderabad, (ii) Nireekshna, an NGO and also (iii) Maternal Health and Research Trust, Hyderabad. He was awarded more than 20 research projects by funding agencies such as UGC, ICMR, DBT and DST. He also served as the Members of many high level committees of ICMR, UGC, DST and DBT.

He has more than 45 years of teaching and research experience. He has guided 45 students for Ph.D degree. More than 200 students worked under his supervision for their M.Sc. dissertation. Published 326 research papers in reputed journals and edited 18 books on genetics & mental retardation.

Objectives of the Department:

1. Evaluation of environmental pollutants for carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic effects.
2. Occupational hazards in industrial and agriculture workers.

Introduction:

Environmental pollution is one of the biggest challenges of our time, posing serious threat to human and animal life and the planet’s sustainability. The environmental is highly polluted because of industrialization, urbanization and deforestation.

Occupational hazards:

Occupational hazards are risks associated with working in different occupations. People working in various industries and people working in agriculture fields are at a high risk of exposure to a variety of Chemicals. Thus there is an immediate need to understand the genetic and carcinogenic risks in these vulnerable populations.

Studies undertaken:

This department has undertaken studies in industrial workers, Women Beedi Rollers in rural areas and in residents of industrial areas.
