Our journey of 47 Years

Mahavir Hospital is one of the four reputed centres for tuberculosis research in the country. It is the first private hospital recognized by the Government of India for the Public Private Mix Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (PPM DOTS) for TB. The hospital is carrying out the National Tuberculosis Control Programme as a model of public–private partnership.

The Research Centre of the hospital, known as the Bhagwan Mahavir Medical Research Centre, has been conducting world-class research in Tuberculosis and has received substantial grants from both national and international funding agencies. The Research Centre is recognized by the Government of India as a “Centre of Excellence for TB Research” in the country.

Clinical trials on Tuberculosis vaccines were undertaken and sponsored by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). So far, the vaccine has been tested on more than 3,000 individuals and was found to be safe. In addition, clinical trials were carried out to evaluate the efficacy of new anti-TB drugs.

This Public Private Mix (PPM) Module, popularly known as the “Mahavir Model”, was developed by our Research Team under the dynamic leadership of the late Dr. K.J.R. Murthy. The model has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for replication in other countries.

In the year 2000, Mr. Bill Clinton, President of the United States of America, visited Mahavir Hospital and commended the outstanding work carried out by our dedicated doctors under the PPM DOTS programme in the global fight to eradicate Tuberculosis.
